Canine Parvovirus Outbreak in Windsor, ON

Veterinarians are responding to an outbreak of canine parvovirus (CPV) in Windsor, ON. They have noted several instances in which samples from dogs with clinical signs consistent with CPV have returned negative test results on point-of-care (POC) tests. When those cases with a negative POC test result were referred for further testing by PCR, a positive result was found for each, confirming the suspicion of CPV. When encountering cases of suspected parvovirus that return negative test results on POC tests, veterinarians are encouraged to proceed as though they are positive for the virus, to ensure that appropriate treatment and isolation measures are taken.
